Your assignment

April is National Poetry Month. As a high school English teacher I am going to incorporate this celebration into my daily routine.

My request: What is your favorite poet and poem? Have you written any poems that I may share with my students?

My plan: I would like to compile and publish some of my students' poetry on the blog-in-progress (more on this soon).

Your assignment: In order to inspire and encourage my students to write poetry, I thought it would be fun to utilize the brilliant friends I have chosen to play with during this game called "life." Don't you remember my 20-something birthday party in Bend, Oregon when I asked you to bring a libation and an original poem based on the theme of time? (What a joyous memory...ahhh, that was a great night!) Share that poem, give me a new one, make up a haiku, look at the fresh blossoms and get inspired...you know the drill!

Your assignment is due by April 7th. (post it as a "comment" here or email me)

WOW! Great to hear from you. You should type more to me (don't worry, you will only get better the more you do it). Please send me your story, I would love to read it. Is the mysterious dog based on your dog? Write back! I love you!

OH YES! I remember that one...the three of us on the stage, the dim lighting, and nothing but love from the audience. Thanks so mcuh for conjuring the memory. Do you have a copy? Great to see you here, do it again, do it again!

I have a colorful Neruda poster in my classroom from my esteemed colleague, Simon. I would love to know the one you recommend!

Great, please send it to me! This is fun, let's continue to write and challenge each other on this blog.

Here is a writing topic for you:
Write a story where you are the narrator and you suddenly wake up and you are stuck on a deserted island. No one is with you (not even mom and dad) but you are not lonely or scared, yet. What is the first thing you do, and why? What is the second thing you do? What eventually makes you feel scared and lonely?

What do you think about this writing topic? Give it a try and send it to me ! I CAN'T WAIT TO READ YOUR STORIES!
Love ya!

hi.i will see how that would turn out.i don't have writers workshop much anymore but i will try.writers workshop is when you have free writing time and you can write whatever you want.the story i already wrote(the mysterious dog)is going to a real publishing company and getting turned into a hardback.i could still get a book published at school but on regular paper and i would just get it all and do it at school on a publishing machine with a teacher.i could make what you told me into a poem like thing.i would only do it during writers workshop though so it might be a long time until i finish it or even start it.plus writing stories isn't my favorite thing or anything i just like to do it during a certain time.i will start the poem like thing as soon as we get a chance to do writers workshop.i can't wait until next writers workshop now. love ya. -carly

Hey! Don't worry and stress about writing on the topic I gave you. If you do have time try to write a poem using the idea I gave you, I would like to read what you come up with. Also, let me know when you do have writer's workshop next, that sounds cool! What about your other classes, how are those going?
I am going to be away for about a week. It is my school's spring break now, YIPPEE! I will write more soon!
I love you,
Kerri
PS-What grade are you in now (don't be mad at me for not remembering!)
