¡yerba mate!

I just have to write quickly about the past twenty four hours. We are settled in the best hostel in Patagonia (just typing the words ¨we¨, ïn¨, and ¨Patagonia¨ makes my heart smile) and we made some memories last night...in fact, this has to be quick because more memories are being made right behind me in the living room of this, the best hostel in Patagonia. But, we (Kelly, my friend from grad school, Aaron and I) are all staying in the same hostel and we sat with the owner, his girlfriend and a few other cohorts and drank yerba mate for 3 (if not more) hours before we collectively dined over homemade pizza. Turko, the hostel owner, and our newfound friend, taught us the Argentine tradition of drinking mate. I was even fortunate enough to gain the honor of being the ¨server¨. I was only criticized once when the water was a bit too cold (even the temperature of the water has to be precise for acceptance from the Argentines). I will recount this entire tradition when there isn´t so much interesting chatter behind me. Truly, being in Bariloche has been magical every moment, even despite today´s constant rain. I will tackle the photo chore tomorrow, just so we can share in the magic that is Patagonia!

What is yerba mate? How could you leave us uninformed? Sitting is a lovely yellow hostel with new friends and old does seem like magic. So enjoy every moment, even the rainy ones. Back here in the U.S. the whole country is melting, melting, melting!!

I will ask the same question...what is yerba mate? and what does it mean to be the one to serve it? You sound fabulous - i am so glad that you are having so much fun? how is the spanish speaking coming along? Have you started you second session of classes? We are sweltering here - the temperature has been in the 90's with heat index in the 3 digits. There is a tropical storm off the NC coast and i only hope it goes out to sea and not this way. We are planning a good old american cookout on assateague this weekend with bob and gi and her family (8 germans are visiting)- i hope this one works. we tried this last year for pete's birthday and got rained out so keep your fingers crossed. dad and i have been buggin' on assateague this week so it has been long and hot/sweaty days but the paycheck will be nice!!!
i saw Kelly Hughes sunday - tending bar at Mackey's. She looks just about the same - not a lot of talking time as it was happy hour but she says there has not been a whole lot of response yet for the reunion but most everyone she mentioned are names i know so i think it will be fun for you to see old faces, especially after you have had such an experience to come home from.
Take care hugs to Aaron - i miss you guys and look forward to more interesting tales until i see your faces again.

love ya
